Andy and Amy Popkin believed so much in their passion of collecting china that they created their very own store, Hot Plates, in historic, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Their enthusiasm began while the two were still in college. It all started when they stumbled upon a company offering to buy discontinued sets of china. From there, Amy and Andy headed out to local auctions and yard sales to seek lost treasures of grandma’s old gravy boats and other fun items. “Sometimes, we’d buy a set of china and one piece we’d make a nice profit, while the others were worth pennies. Soon, we’d amassed a mixed up set of odds and ends,” says Amy. One day, Andy appeared with a trunk full of china he found in a warehouse. These plates and cups were old restaurant-ware dating back to the 1940’s; the plates were heavy and decorated with old restaurant names. There were even pieces with company names that were from old-fashioned corporate dining rooms. Andy notes, “We still eat off of those plates daily.” “I was looking for a new career and thought why not celebrate our passion of collecting and open a store. The rest is history,” laughs Andy. In 1992, the doors opened at Hot Plates. After several years, Andy and Amy expanded the store and added new kitchen items, linens, glassware and more. Hot Plates specializes in having the largest selection, for a small store, of Fiesta China in the country. The store carries most of the manufacturers' 700 different shapes and colors. One of the most exciting things about Hot Plates' Fiesta line is that they allow their customers to mix and match colors and buy pieces separately. If a customer wants a scarlet plate with tangerine bowl and a peacock mug, Amy and Andy are happy to oblige. Even more exciting, Hot Plates gladly ships their Fiesta products all over the country to collectors. Whether you are planning to buy Fiesta china or visit historic Bucks County, don’t miss out on what the Philadelphia Inquirer calls “the china shop of your dreams.” Hot Plates feels like a step back in time. “We hear our customers say the store reminds them of their grandmother’s kitchen.” All that is missing is a hot batch of cookies coming out of the oven.
